Green Design Day #3: Sarajevo BH
Dynamic and inspiring Green Design Biennale Day in Sarajevo was filled with optimism just one day after the Green Design Week in June. The event was initiated by the founder of the Green Design Centre for South East Europe and Sarajevo Green Design Foundation, and GTB Lab, Elma Durmisevic, who elaborated on the importance of multidisciplinary work on the challenges of decarbonisation, while focusing on the creation of new rules, design and behavioural codes that will reverse the downward spiral of climate change.
Green Design Day, through Elma Durmisevic's introductory lecture, highlighted the beauty and necessity of the transition to a circular economy, the role of design, digital tools (EU Project Digital Deconstruction) and the efforts of individual stakeholders. UNDP Head of Innovations Marina Dimova presented how UNDP as a global player acts locally with tailored action plans to help individual countries like Bosnia and Herzegovina transition to a circular economy. During the debate, the Chamber of Commerce presented examples of how industry is preparing to adopt CO2 measures proposed by the EU ahead of local regulators. The Chamber of Engineers pointed out that subsidies will be essential to help industry adopt circular processes and become competitive, individual NGOs talked about green and circular certifications to help shape policy.
Finally, architects, urban planners and fashion designers showed how sometimes unimaginable scenarios are possible when combined with creativity, new techniques and the adoption of digital technologies. Many thanks to Sanela Klaric for the fantastic chairing of the day and the debate, to the Faculty of Architecture, University of Sarajevo, Prof. Aida Idrizbegovic for the great hospitality, to Senada Demirovic Habibija and Renata Asceric Androsevic for the inspiring summery of design studios and to Naida Vilic for once again presenting a great slow fashion concept and design with reused fabrics.
Many thanks to the inspiring panel Dalida Zečić, Ismar Ceremida, MBA in Circular Economy, Vedad Suljic CETEOR, Mirsad Jašarspahić, Venera Simonovic, Jasminka Bjelevac, Nihad Harbas.
The event, in cooperation with UNDP and the Green Building Council, brought together stakeholders from the public and private sectors, city authorities, chambers of engineers and commerce, architects and students from the Faculty of Architecture, University of Sarajevo.
GREEN DESIGN BIENNALE is a dynamic multidisciplinary platform that brings together designers, architects, urban planners, ICT experts, engineers from all over the world every two years, with the aim of promoting new design principles and solutions that pave the way for eliminating the negative impact of modern civilization on the ecological systems of the planet. The Green Design Biennale was initiated by the President of the Green Design Foundation (SGDF) Dr. Elma Durmisevic creator of the Innovation Park for Circular Building in Southeast Europe (Green Design Center Mostar), in order to strengthen awareness and scientific capacity in the transition to a circular economy. Sarajevo is the third Green Design station, after Banja Luka and Tuzla, where the Green Design Day (GDD) will be organized after Green Design Biennale Mostar 2022. The Sarajevo Green | Design Biennale Day will focus on circular building design and circular building economy in construction and will be organized in cooperation with UNDP, GTB Lab and the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Sarajevo. The participants will be introduced to Green Design Biennale 2024, the Green Design Centre and SGDF's pathways to support development of a resilient built environment.
