'Level Up Circular Building'

Looking back at the incredible and vibrant programme of the Digital Deconstruction showcase event 'Level Up Circular Building' with fantastic speakers, it is clear that the Digital Deconstruction Consortium has managed to push the boundaries of digitising construction and demonstrate the added value of digital tools within a complex framework of circular buildings.

The Digital Deconstruction Platform has managed to bring together digital tools that demonstrate how to trace building materials using 3D scanning and the fantastic work of Jean-Yves Marié BIM-Y, how to deconstruct buildings without losing valuable building materials and assess their reuse potential using the automated process of Reversible BIM based on the work of Elma Durmisevic. How to transform these results into a Circular Building Profile, Circular Product Profile and Circularity Index defined by Durmisevic, GTB Lab. and how to create a material list with corresponding materials passports connected to a sales platform using BlockChain thanks to the great work of Simon Duindam and Erol Oztan, BlockMaterials.

The day started with an inspiring lecture by Jan Jongert, who reminded us that design with reusable materials is absolutely feasible and finds its application in the work of Superuse Studios, presented in the Dutch pavilion at this year's Venice Biennale.

The afternoon programme included a presentation of the digital deconstruction platform, developed by LIST, by Annie Guerriero and Calin Boje. External views came from Gilli Hobbs, Reusefully, on the policy and potential knowledge behind the DDC platform, which can help shape EU policy and standards on circular buildings, and from Jan Boström, iBinder - Sundahus, on work towards an open source standardised material passport format launched in Scandinavia this year.

The visit to GTB Lab was a tour through a physical and digital twin at the same time, presenting in real time design with reused materials and design for disassembly and reuse. In addition, the GTB Lab demonstrated how information on deconstruction and reuse strategies can be captured for each individual element in a BIM-based Reversible BIM tool, which is easily accessible through a QR code and 3D viewer.

The day ended with the presentation of case applications and a promising industry view by Ron Jacobs of Jansen AG on the potential of the Digital Deconstruction Platform and the application of digital tools such as Reversible BIM by Durmisevic to support the circularity of facade systems developed by Jansen.

Special thanks to Harald Van Hooren and Provincie Limburg for coordinating this important project and to Peter Bertholet Stadsregio Parkstad Limburg and Casper Gelderblom, Heerlen alderman, for supporting the DDC project and recognising the potential that the project results will have in accelerating the transition to circularity in construction in the south of the Netherlands and in particular in Region of Parkstad and City of Heerlen.
